Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study reveals that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People purchasing such drugs must be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you become starving," said a patient.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle changes.
