The Princess of Wales's Traditional Festive Service of Carols Honours Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual Christmas carol concert at the iconic London venue, with guests including royals, celebrities and local heroes who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The 1,600 guests will hear a selection of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from stars like Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Focusing on Kindness and Compassion

The focus of the event, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

Among the guests will be Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who founded an organisation, a support fund, to help households where there is a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," the Princess expressed in a message before the festive gathering.

Carefully Paced Reappearance

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own gradual return to the public eye subsequent to her illness and medical care, last month delivering her major oration since 2023, in which she discussed recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Musical Talent and Access

Those coming to the Abbey can listen to talented youth performers aided by the charitable trust Future Talent, set up with the help of the late Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for music lessons.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who is a trumpet player and is from southwest Wales, has been supported by the organisation, with grants helping towards instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "awesome" to be performing at tonight's service.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," Carys said. She is now a student at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to develop their musical skills.

A Sisterly Duo

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who plays the euphonium, will be present at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Within the audience will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will feature young Saphia Turner, nine, honouree of a youth community award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to raise money for local food charities.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been decorated with specially made wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

Among the musical performers will be singer Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a nautical singing ensemble, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "a dream come true."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be televised and shown on television on December 24th.
